Innovative ‘Permeable Concrete Road’ Designed by Sonargaon University Students to Combat Urban Waterlogging

Bangladesh

In areas like Dhanmondi, Mirpur, Banani, Mohammadpur, and Bashundhara of Dhaka city, even a small amount of rain causes severe waterlogging, leading to immense suffering for residents. In an effort to address this longstanding issue, two students from Sonargaon University Innovation and Designers’ Society (SU-IDS) have come up with a practical solution.

Md. Junaed Ahmed and Rakib Hossain, both senior executive members of SU-IDS and students of the Civil Engineering Department, have designed an innovative “Permeable Concrete Road” capable of absorbing rainwater and draining it through an underground system. This special road can absorb between 200 to 1,000 liters of water per hour, significantly reducing surface-level water accumulation and ensuring smoother movement during rainfall.

Their project, titled “Buildex Bomber,” was recently showcased at the Eco Youth Summit 1.0, where it earned the Champion title, making it a proud moment for Sonargaon University.

In addition to the road design, the duo also introduced an eco-friendly concept of using recycled plastic waste in road pitch by melting it down—aiming to reduce plastic pollution while contributing to sustainable infrastructure.

Speaking about the innovation, Junaed Ahmed said, Our goal was to develop a solution that addresses real urban issues. Our design is eco-friendly, cost-effective, and feasible for real-world implementation in city environments.

This exceptional innovation by students of Sonargaon University is seen as a promising step toward sustainable urban planning and disaster-resilient infrastructure in Bangladesh.
